General

By definition, XBRL is the open international standard for digital business reporting, managed by a global not for profit consortium, XBRL International. At present, it is used across the globe in over 50 countries. Millions of XBRL documents are generated each year, replacing paper-based reports with more useful, effective and accurate digital versions.

The “Malaysian Business Reporting System (MBRS) is an online submission platform based on the eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL) format, introduced by the Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia (SSM) in 2018.

MBRS allows for the annual submission of:
i) Annual Return (AR);
ii) Financial Statements and Report (FS); and
iii) Exemption Applications (EA) related to the FS and AR.

Its aim is to simplify the submission of financial returns and annual reports for companies. For further information, kindly visit SSM’s website.

MBRS is comprised of three components, which are:

SSM XBRL Taxonomy (SSMxT) is a dictionary that is used to identify financial and non-financial reporting elements and their relationships in a standardised manner.

MBRS Preparation Tool (mTool) is an Excel-based utility that allows preparers to generate AR, FS and EA in XBRL format, in compliance with MBRS and SSMxT requirements.

MBRS Portal (mPortal) is an online submission portal that allows makers to submit the XBRL reports generated by mTool to SSM. Lodgers may use the portal to approve administrative rights, digitally sign submissions, make payment, track submission status and more.

E-XBRL may be used by any company of any size.

E-XBRL has undergone numerous rounds of testing with mTools to ensure that it is fully compliant with MBRS and industry standards. It will be submitted to SSM for further review and endorsement.

Please note that the Excel sheet has already been embedded in the E-XBRL Master Template provided to ease the process.

You can open the embedded sheet in Excel by opening the Word template, and then:

  1. Open the Word template, using MS Word 2007 or a later version
  2. Right click on the embedded Excel sheet
  3. Select “Worksheet Object”
  4. Select “Open”

The embedded sheet will then load into MS Excel in a separate window.

When you the save the Excel file, it will automatically update the data in the Word template. The Word template must be left open in the background while you are editing the Excel file.

Please note that E-XBRL doesn’t accept the separate Excel file for conversion. You will have to upload the Word template as it is, with the Excel sheet embedded in a single file.
